Reading is a vacation from the real world. Books can open doors to alternate realities or even different worlds. For me, I read to escape. Other people may distract themselves from their troubles with video games, movies, television, etc. but my outlet has always been reading. If I get too stressed or caught up in something going on in my life, I read a book with a plot that has nothing to do with my problems. I can normally pick up any written work, make a conscious effort to understand the text word for word and it is truly calming to me.
Occasionally the opposite happens; nothing is exciting is happening in my life so I read to gain experience. I’ve always dreamed of growing up and traveling the world, so I enjoy reading about different places and different cultures.
My worst reading habit is beginning a new book to procrastinate. If my homework seems hard, I’ll put it off until I finish the chapter. If I don’t want to do chores, I’ll read instead.
From time to time, I’ll read to become more informed on a topic, and I read for school, but I really don’t want to do that reading. So, for me at least, reading is an alternant form of entertainment that keeps me going from day to day.
